Moving In

28 01 2009

The renovations finished right on schedule!  There are a few minor adjustments that need to be made, but most of the painting, installation, and decorating work is done.  Staff are using the remainder of this week to move reference materials back into the reading room area.  We are also going to be moving into our new offices from our makeshift ones all over campus.

We appreciate the patience that all of our researchers have shown us during this month.  We hope to see you in person beginning February 2.

Almost Finished

27 01 2009

The renovations are actually proceeding on schedule.  The installation of the carpet finished over the weekend thanks to the willingness of one of our staff members to spend her entire Saturday at work.  The rest of the staff appreciates your sacrifice.

We are in the home stretch now as the new cubicle, excuse me, open office space, walls are being installed.  The furniture installation will finish today.  Staff will use the rest of the week to move into their new offices and to set up the resources in the reading room.  We plan to reopen to the public on February 2, 2009 as scheduled.  We hope that you will stop by to see the new reading room.  We also hope to host at least one open house this year in honor of our 40th anniversary.  See you soon!

Almost Finished

22 01 2009

The painting crew is nearly finished with their work and color is a welcome addition to the University Archives.  The gentle colors make it seem as if spring is right around the corner.  There are only a few steps left before the archives reopens to researchers on Monday, February 2nd.  The next step is for the carpeting to be installed.  The carpeting should be finished by Monday when the new furniture is set up. The new phone system will also be installed early next week.  Staff will use the remaining part of the week to move into their offices and to move all of the reference sources and collections to their new locations.

We look forward to seeing our researchers again in our new setting.  It’s not long now.

With the painting nearly finished, staff eagerly await the carpet installation.

Next Step: Painting

14 01 2009

The asbestos abatement has finished and renovations are proceeding right on schedule.  The abatement was a bit noisy at times, but the staff working in the basement persevered.  We did get a little bit of cabin fever and were hoping to use the concrete floor in the archives for a roller derby, but the painters were waiting to get into the archives first thing this morning.

The painters have quite the blank canvas inside 101 Conrad Hall.  The room matches almost exactly the snowy outdoors.  Let’s hope an early spring comes to both the interior and exterior of the building.

Renovations – Next Step

7 01 2009

The staff of the archives managed to get the reading room cleared and the set-up crew removed all paneling and large furniture.  The next step in renovations is the asbestos abatement.  The carpeting will be removed and the asbestos tile underneath will then be removed.  During this time, staff have been relocated to the basement or other parts of campus.

January 2009 Renovations

6 01 2009

The Michigan State University Archives & Historical Collections is undergoing renovations on the reading room and staff area during the month of January 2009.  We hope that these renovations will mean a better research area for people wishing to use the collections in the MSU Archives.  Unfortunately, while undergoing these renovations, the MSU Archives will be closed to the public.  We will keep you informed on the progress we are making by posting photos of the changes as they happen.

We are sorry for any inconvenience that the closure may cause to people.  Again, we hope that once we reopen in February 2009 that the archives will be better than ever.
