On Tuesday, February 24, archivists Portia Vescio and Sarah Roberts attended the Mulling over Michigan conference in Lansing. Mulling over Michigan is a statewide Michigan studies conference aimed at K-12 educators. The archivists were there as exhibitors to showcase the materials in the MSU Archives to the K-12 teachers. Our hope is to increase the number of young students using the archives for historical research.
Sarah created a tabletop display and Portia created flyers to hand out. The archivists told the educators about the historical resources relating to MSU and collections relating to specific topics in Michigan history, such as the Civil War, lumbering, and agriculture.
Teachers were interested in having archivists speak in the classroom, but also wanted to know about materials that were available online. While only a few materials are currently available online, the archives is working on a project to have more materials accessible. This project will be ready for use before the end of the year.
